Why give blood?

Would you accept a blood transfusion if you were about to die?

If the answer is yes, then it's only right you give blood too. You can save a life, it might even be the life of one of your relatives or friends!

Apparently, each time you give blood, you remove some of the iron it contains. It is believed that high blood iron levels can increase the risk of heart disease. Iron has been shown to speed the oxidation of cholesterol, a process thought to increase the damage to arteries that ultimately leads to cardiovascular disease.

It is also believe that blood iron levels help explain why a man's risk of heart disease begins earlier than a woman's. Women lose blood -- and lower their iron levels -- each time they menstruate. Men, on the other hand, begin storing iron in body tissues starting in their twenties, which is just about the time their heart attack danger begins to climb.

According to Victor Herbert, M.D., a hematologist at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, there are normally about 1,000 milligrams of iron "stored" in the average adult man's body but only about 300 milligrams in a premenopausal woman's. Once women stop menstruating, however, their iron levels -- and their heart disease risk -- begin to climb, eventually matching that of men.

It has been shown that giving blood every 3 months helps to cleanse the body. Gets rid of bound iron and some old red cells. RBC's live for 4 months after they are produced.

Evidence suggests that giving blood has health benefits and could save your life.

Not everyone believes that though: "I do not believe there is proof of an association between iron level and the risk of heart disease in men with normal iron metabolism," says Peter Tomasulo, M.D., a director at the International Federation of Red Cross Societies. "The data is preliminary at best." Most scientists, in fact, still think estrogen is probably the most important reason why women are protected from heart disease until they reach menopause.

Proof won't come until researchers conduct large and well-controlled studies that compare the heart disease risk of men who regularly give blood with that of men who don't. Already several small studies have been done, however, offering tantalizing evidence that donating blood might be a very good idea. There is no risk to a healthy person donating blood, and potentially significant benefit.

Heart Disease - Black women

Contrary to general beliefs, black women are more likely to die from Coronary Heart Disease than caucasian women perhaps because they are more likely to have more risk factors, including high blood pressure (hypertension), diabetes, obesity, stress and smoking. In all cases, one of the problems is that many women don't recognize the warning signs of coronary heart disease (CHD) until their health and their lives are at risk.

What is Coronary Heart Disease (CHD)?

Like any muscle, the heart needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients that are carried to it by the blood in the coronary arteries. When the coronary arteries become narrowed or clogged and cannot supply enough blood to the heart, the result is CHD. If not enough oxygen-carrying blood reaches the heart, the heart may respond with a pain called angina. The pain is usually felt in the chest or sometimes in the left arm and shoulder. The same inadequate blood supply may sometimes cause no symptoms and this condition is called silent angina. WHen the blood supply is cut of completely, the result is a heart attack. The part of the heart that does not receive oxygen begins to die, and some of the heart muscle may be permanently damaged. Heart attack and stroke are common results of conditions that restrict or stop the blood flow to the heart or brain.

What causes CHD?

CHD is caused by a thickening of the inside walls of the coronary arteries. This thickening, called atherosclerosis, narrows the space through which blood can flow, decreasing and sometimes completely cutting off the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the heart.
Atherosclerosis usually occurs when a person has high levels of cholesterol, a fat-like substance, in the blood. Cholesterol and fat, circulating in the blood, build up on the walls of the arteries. This buildup narrows the arteries and can slow or block the flow of blood. When the level of cholesterol in the blood is high, there is a greater chance that it will be depositied onto the artery walls. This process begins in most people during childhood and the teenage years, and worsens as they get older.
In addition to high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure and smoking also contribute to CHD. On average, each of these doubles your chance of developing heart disease. Therefore, a person who has all three risk factors is eight time more likely to develop heart disease than someone who has none. Obesity and physical inactivity are other factors that can lead to CHD. Overweight increases the likelihood of developing high blood cholesterol and high blood pressure, and physical inactivity increases the risk of heart attack. Regular exercise, good nutrition, and smoking cessation are key to controlling the risk factors for CHD.
Ladies, our health is our most precious possession, we need to take care of ourselves. Tomorrow won't do...it starts today.

20 Things A Man Should Know About Women - Brief Article

I found this browsing the internet:

TWO words, fellas--listen! Carefully. Because I am about to share with you a list of things you may want to know about women. Important things. Useful things. Things that may leave you shaking or scratching your head, but will nonetheless greatly enhance your ability to get along with us, if not understand or unravel the mystery of womankind.

Which is why however odd or irrational you may find anything on this list (and if my informal survey of various male friends is any indication, you will find a fair number of them to be both), be warned: You ignore or dismiss them at your own peril. Though there is probably some truth to your sentiments, my advice to any man who genuinely wants to enhance his ability to peacefully coexist with the fairer sex is to do two things with the information contained in this list: Accept it as truth, and commit it to memory. I promise, you will thank me later.

Speaking of thanks, for those of you who find this list helpful, you owe a big one to my dear friend, let us call him John, for its creation. With the help of several Sister-friends, at John's request, I put it together as a birthday gift to him after several innocent but serious blunders ended more than one promising relationship before it/they could really begin. Here, then, 20 things a man should know about a woman:

1. We can tell just about everything we need to know about a Brother just by looking at his shoes.

2. Women like wild and crazy men for dating purposes because they're exciting and unpredictable. But when it comes time to choose "The One," we don't want tempestuous, temperamental and tattoos; we want responsible, reliable, real. (See, we're not so different from you after all.)

3. A surprise weekend at a romantic bed and breakfast is to a woman what 50-yard-line seats at the Super Bowl are to a man.

4. No means no! No matter how badly you were hoping/wishing/expecting it would be yes.

5. As a rule, we know when you're lying.

6. We always know when you're sneaking looks at (a) another woman (b) our breasts and/or (c) our butt. It doesn't matter how shrewd or swift the glance.

7. Nothing says "I love you" like thoughtful, unsolicited little gifts on days that aren't "special"--anniversaries, birthdays, Christmas, Valentine's Day. Extra credit if they're personal enough to show you've really been paying attention to us (e.g., A bouquet of our favorite flowers. In our favorite color. Arranged in our favorite vase.)

8. Our job is just as stressful/serious/significant as yours.

9. Nonjudgmental, uninterrupted listening to our hopes/dreams/fears/insecurities, even if it's for the one-thousandth time, makes us feel we are the center of your universe. Where we belong.

10. One lie spoils a thousand truths. Once discovered, it will be stored in long-term memory for later retrieval.

11. There is no such thing as too many shoes.

12. Ditto the perfect little black dress.

13. Sometimes the earth doesn't move. And no, you're not going to be able to tell when it doesn't.

14. We take birthdays and anniversaries seriously. Forgetting either requires serious justification ("My mother had to have emergency surgery"), explanation ("The doctors asked me not to leave the floor even long enough to make a phone call") and amends ("But I got you a little something from Tiffany's that I hope you'll like").

15. Pillow talk is special, sacred and, above all, secret. Repeating it to anyone is grounds for a breakup.

16. A woman's trust is a catacomb, not a blackboard. Betrayals are not erased; they are only filed away in our mind and heart--permanently and, in the best circumstances, deeply.

17. There are certain weekend date destinations that never go out of style. The mountains and the beach. A tropical island. A suite at the Ritz. Your place cleaned/equipped/arrayed to look like a suite at the Ritz. (Think fresh flowers, scented candles, rose petals scattered atop freshly laundered sheets.)

18. A great haircut can give us a new lease on life. A bad one is not to be trivialized, minimized or joked about.

19. Chronic lying, unemployment and/or unexplained disappearances are automatic dealbreakers.

20. Forget the destination--for us, it's all about the journey.

How To Deal With The Major Killers - diseases in black women - Brief Article

YOU'RE a 40-year-old Black woman.

You think your health is pretty good, even though you haven't been to the doctor for five years, and you haven't stopped smoking and eating junk food, and you're not as active as you think you should be. If you're going to turn over a new leaf, you'd better do it fast because these characteristics are among the most important risk factors for the major killers of Black women--breast cancer, lung cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. While several of the diseases aren't entirely preventable, doctors say, there are ways you can protect yourself and improve your chances for survival should you be stricken by any of the conditions. In general, eat less and move more.

Exercise at least 30 minutes a day, either by taking a brisk walk or stepping up to your gym's cardiovascular equipment. If you're a smoker, quit now. Smoking is the most preventable aspect of heart disease, lung cancer and stroke, according to the American Heart Association. Eat a healthy, balanced diet of fruits and vegetables. Keep the junk food and the unhealthy snacks to a minimum. And go for annual doctors visits to maintain good health.

Heart Disease ; Stroke Drink alcohol in moderation, and know your family's medical history. The risk factors for heart disease and stroke that cannot be controlled include increasing age, gender (men tend to have a greater risk), heredity and race (Black women are at a greater risk for heart disease and stroke than White women), and the occurrence of a previous heart attack or stroke. But there are several risk factors that Sisters can modify, treat or control by changing lifestyle habits. Smoking, again, is a major risk factor. Another risk factor is high blood cholesterol, which is a major factor in heart disease and indirectly increases the stroke risk. Read more HERE!

High blood pressure is the most important risk factor far stroke and a major factor in heart disease. Other risk factors include physical inactivity, obesity and diabetes. To combat these modifiable risk factors, exercise regularly, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and decrease your fat intake.

Diabetes With the proper care, nutrition and treatment, diabetes doesn't have to be a daunting diagnosis, says Dr. Kimbra Bell, an internist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Dr. Bell says that with the proper diet and exercise, you can prevent the onset of diabetes. If you're overweight, drop the pounds; diabetes often strikes those with a sedentary lifestyle.

In addition, exercise at least 30 minutes each day to keep your body in good physical condition, and, drink 6 to 8 glasses of water a day. Eat plenty of green vegetables and stay away from a lot of sweet foods as well as fried foods. If you have a family history of diabetes, are overweight, over 40, have a high cholesterol level with the common diabetic symptoms (increased thirst and urination), get tested immediately. The longer you wait, the more damage you can do and the more complications you can have. If you are diagnosed with diabetes, remember that the disease is entirely treatable with diet, medication and exercise, Dr. Bell says. "Diabetes [demands] a [new] lifestyle," she says.

Lung Cancer The primary cause of lung cancer is the use of tobacco--smoking cigarettes, cigars or pipes, medical experts say. Harmful carcinogens (cancer-causing agents) in tobacco damage the cells in the lungs. Other causes include exposure to radon, asbestos, pollution, second-hand smoke and other lung diseases. Researchers say the best way to prevent lung cancer is to stop, or never start, smoking. If you're not a smoker and you want to stay clear of this disease, doctors also suggest limiting your exposure to environmental cancer-causers and second-hand smoke.

Breast Cancer Dr. LaSalle D. Leffall Jr., Charles R. Drew Professor of Surgery at the Howard University College of Medicine and chairman-elect of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, says that "as far as we know, there is no way to prevent breast cancer, but there are ways to prevent it from becoming invasive." Breast cancer specialists, such as Dr. Rogsbert F. Phillips of Metro Surgical Associates in Atlanta, say that early detection is the key. The earlier you're diagnosed, the lesser the chance that the cancer will become invasive.

Doctors recommend annual mammograms for women over 40 years old. If you have a family history, you may want to have a baseline mammogram done at an earlier age. Some women even go so far as to be genetically tested for the disease. "Information is the key to controlling a lot of diseases," says Dr. Phillips. "If we don't educate the public, we're still behind the eight ball." "How To Deal With The Major Killers - diseases in black women

Vitamins and minerals play a vital role in the function of the body, the nails and the hair

Holland & Barrett

Vitamins and minerals play a vital role in the function of the body, the use of certain vitamins can most certainly play a major part in helping to maintain a healthy head of hair.

The human body is an amazingly complex and wonderful machine, but it cannot function without a supply of food. The nutrients in food are needed for energy, movement, heat, growth, repair, hair growth and sometimes reproduction. The body needs to be able to digest the foods it takes in so that it can be used in various ways. There are six basic types of nutrients and two basic non-nutrients found in food. The six nutrients are carbohydrate, fat, protein, vitamins, minerals, trace elements; the two non-nutrients are fibre and water. Generally speaking most foods contain several nutrients, in varying amounts. Carrots, for instance, contain a little protein, a trace of fat, some carbohydrate, a good deal of water, a little sugar, fibre, and a selection of vitamins and minerals such as potassium, sodium, calcium, iron, zinc, vitamins B6, C and E, folic acid, biotin and pantothenic acid, etc. We need a combination of all the above nutrients to maintain a normal and healthy body.
Para-Aminobenzoic Acid (PABA) as this vitamin is commonly known is one of the lesser known members of the B complex family, has been shown to be an anti-grey hair vitamin. In tests in black animals that were feed with a diet deficient of PABA, they developed grey hair, when the animals were reintroduced to the vitamin, normal hair colour was restored.

America's Best Vitamins

Research on humans with grey hair being given 200mg of PABA after each meal produced results that showed that a study of the hair afterwards resulted in a seventy per cent result of the hair returning to its original colour. Other research claims that PABA combined with folic acid also helps restore hair to its original colour. Deficiency of PABA, Biotin, Folic Acid and Pantothenic Acid appears to affect hair colour. Hair colour can normally be restored with a diet rich in the B vitamins and in the few cases where colour is not restored the hair will improve in quality and strength of growth.
PABA and the B vitamins are found in foods such as liver, kidney, whole grain and yeast. The richest source being liver.
Inositol
Inositol is also a member of the B vitamin group. It is a compound occurring in the brain, muscles, liver, kidney and eyes.
In laboratory animals, a diet lacking Inositol produced baldness, but when the vitamin was added to the food of these animals, the hair grew back again. It was also observed that male animals lost hair twice as fast as female animals. The result of this experiment would suggest that males require a higher Inositol intake than females. An Inositol deficient diet can also cause eczema, a form of skin irritation.
One doctor in a series of experiments prescribed Inositol together with other sources of B vitamins to all his balding patients. In almost all case's hair loss was arrested, in some case's hair growth was noticeable in as little as one month. In one case hair recovery was total and not one bald spot remained.
Inositol, also appears to reduce the amount of cholesterol in the blood.
Biotin
Biotin often called vitamin H, is yet another B complex component. Biotin is a proven hair growth vitamin and a preventative to excessive hair loss. It appears to metabolise fatty acids. Fatty acids are a valuable growth factor in numerous processes in the body including the hair. Biotin is also seen as an aid in preventing hair turning grey.
Biotin is found in egg yolks. Raw egg whites actually hinder effectiveness, but when the albumen (egg white) is cooked, the culprit - a substance called avidin is destroyed by heat. Biotin is also present in liver, milk, yeast and kidney. Balding men might find that a Biotin supplement may keep their hair longer.

Zinc

In laboratory tests animals fed with a zinc supplement showed signs of more hair growth, as opposed to loss of hair in animals that were deprived of zinc in their feed. It was discovered that there was a change in the hair protein structure when zinc was deficient in the diet.
Severe zinc deficiency in humans has been shown to produce baldness and scalp problems that were reversed when zinc was returned to the diet.
Zinc has also been shown to stop hair turning grey. One doctor taking zinc for a year reversed the grey hairs which returned to their original colour.
Zinc can be depleted by high stress levels. For a good source of zinc, wheat germ is the best, other sources are brewer's yeast, pumpkin seeds, oysters and mussels, shrimps and egg yolks.
One delightful effect of zinc is that it has long been regarded as an aphrodisiac, and as such it can be very beneficial for your sex life, which is not a bad side effect to have.
Protein
Protein is a basic ingredient in many hair shampoos and conditioners and is also the major ingredient of hair itself, which is at least ninety per cent protein. Whilst this should not necessarily be the main ingredient in your diet, its importance should not be ignored.
In controlled tests volunteers, supplementing their diets with protein in the form of 14g of gelatine daily, found it increased the thickness of individual hair strands by as much as 45 per cent in only two months.
Diet can influence both hair growth and quality and gelatine has exhibited one of the highest specific dynamic effects of any food or supplement.
Given that a strong hair is a healthy hair, the study noted that the gelatine induced increases in the diet constituted an improvement in the mechanical properties of the hair, including strength. When the volunteers stopped eating the gelatine, their hair returned to its original diameter within six months.
Vitamin E
A Canadian physician who started going grey was able to reverse the process by taking 800iu of vitamin E in capsule form daily. At the age of 68 after some 15 years of taking vitamin E he still has a healthy head of thick black hair, and is the envy of men half his age.
Vitamin E has also been shown to retard the ageing process. It has been suggested that grey hair is a symptom of body degeneration so a supplement of vitamin E can only be beneficial whether you have grey hair or not.
The best natural sources of vitamin E are wheat germ, Soya beans, broccoli, brussel sprouts, spinach and eggs.
Choline
Choline is a B vitamin like nutrient that's useful in counter acting the effects of stress. Recently scientists in America were able to induce toxic levels of stress in baby animals by limiting the amount of choline in their diets.
Choline supplements prescribed to balding patients produced significant results to prove choline's worth in hair loss. Lecithin is a very good source of choline, at it also supplies inositol, a B complex vitamin with a particular affinity with choline, these two vitamins work together well.
Foods rich in choline are egg yolks, yeast, liver and wheat germ.
Vitamin A
A deficiency of Vitamin A will cause dry hair and rough skin. Vitamin A is stored in the liver and if large doses (50,000 - 100,000 iu daily) are taken for a prolonged period the liver cannot store the A vitamin, and it can build up in the body to give unpleasant side effects which include nausea, headaches, hair loss, drowsiness and weight loss.
The R.D.A. for vitamin A is 2,500 iu.

Pantothenic Acid
Pantothenic Acid also known as Calcium Pantothenate is considered to be important to the health of the skin and scalp. Pantothenic acid is necessary for the well being of every body cell and neither carbohydrate nor fat can be changed into energy without it.
This nutrient is also important for the functioning of the adrenal glands that produce much of the male sex hormones.
Volunteers who were feed on a diet deficient of pantothenic acid showed increased vulnerability to infection and adrenal levels dropped, blood pressure also dropped and constipation developed.
Animals lacking this nutrient in their diet became grey haired and the follicles started to waste away.
This supplement is most often found in B complex formulas.
This nutrient is obtained from liver, kidney, egg yolks, whole grains, milk and potatoes.

Good Health for the Entire Family

Cider Vinegar
Hair loss can sometimes be a result of poor metabolism. Many case histories show that as a result of a few teaspoonfuls of cider vinegar each day for several months, hair loss has stopped and the remaining hair has grown healthier and thicker. One reason for thinning hair is a deficiency of minerals salts, so it is easy to understand why mineral-rich cider vinegar can help.
Cider vinegar will not work the same way for everyone. A few people may be allergic to it and others may not be affected at all. But for many people, cider vinegar opens up a wonderful new chapter in life.
Cider vinegar may be taken in a glass of water first thing in the morning or just before meals. One of the side effects can be weight loss which is an added bonus. Seven Wonders "Hair Food" Cocktail
The following drink contains Protein, Choline, Inositol, Pantothenic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin E and Zinc: The seven ingredients' nutritionists most often recommend for growing healthy hair.
8 Fl oz Plain Yoghurt8 Fl oz Orange Juice3 Tablespoons Wheat Germ3 Tablespoons Brewers Yeast1 Tablespoon Lecithin Crystals1 Teaspoon Vitamin C Crystals1 Raw Egg Yolk1 Tablespoon Unflavored Gelatine PowderHoney to Taste (optional) Combine all the ingredients and blend until smooth. If a blender is not available put all the ingredients into a jar with a lid and shake vigorously.
This tonic makes a quick and nutritious breakfast and will work wonders for your hair.
This cocktail should help just about everyone, and you will certainly notice a difference to your hair once you try it.
Another recommended regime for hair loss which has proved to be very effective is a supplement of the Amino Acids, Zinc and Vitamin C. This supplement is particularly good for people who go on crash diets and find a problem with hair loss, or problems which are less obvious such as women who are losing hair as a result of birth control pills and subsequent vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
Hair loss supplement
A daily vitamin and mineral supplement
B ComplexPantothenic AcidFolic AcidP.A.B.A.Vitamin A Zinc
A daily supplement of the above will help produce healthy hair and helps restore grey hair to its original colour.
0ne multi- vitamin formula 1000mg and 500mg magnesium taken daily can have a great effect on hair growth - There is no guarantee but many people have reported a definite reduction of hair loss with this regime.
Another combination that has produced excellent results with some people is a daily supplement of choline and inositol, 1000mg of each daily.
The Amino Acid L Tyrosine is also recommended for helping hair regain its natural colour.
While there are a number of supplements which can be beneficial, it is important for the diet to improve and take precedence over supplements alone. That said there are enormous benefits to be derived from using vitamins, many food products today have been treated with chemicals during the growing process.
When anyone is embarking on a course of vitamins or minerals they should be aware that results will not happen overnight. Vitamins are not some magic potion that is suddenly going to cure hair loss overnight. They may not do anything for some people but for others they will achieve excellent results with noticeable differences in hair growth and in the slowing down of hair loss.
Results will usually take from about three to four months before the body actually reacts to the effects brought about by the vitamins.
Vitamins should always be taken as directed on the bottle and not more than the stated dosage. An extra helping of a vitamin does not make it work twice as much, besides which it can be dangerous overdosing on certain vitamins. When taking vitamins you may find that you have to take them after a meal otherwise they may cause a stomach upset.

A Mars Venus Guide: Dating Do's and Don'ts for Women

Argos

John Gray is the author of Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus. Originally published in 1992, Gray’s book became the best-selling relationship advice book of all time. with over 15-million copies sold worldwide and translated into over 90 languages. That book was followed by fourteen others, including Mars and Venus on a Date, and Mars and Venus Starting Over.

I use a recurring metaphor in my relationship advice: that communication issues arise between men and women because they don’t understand each other’s languages—almost as if they are from different planets.

Since a first date is where a woman and a man first attempt to learn each other’s lingo, it’s also where many relationships go off-kilter, where the first misunderstandings and misperceptions are formed.

Can these mishaps be avoided? Of course. Let me give you some specific examples:

1. Compliment him.

Let’s set our imaginary date at a nice restaurant that the guy has chosen for the first official date. By nice I don’t mean the town’s very best restaurant, just a comfortable place where he has probably gone and had a good meal before.

If a woman says that her dish is, for example, too salty, she will think nothing of talking negatively about the food, or even extend the conversation about why the kitchen staff is not more careful in their use of spices. If it were two women sharing an evening out, complaining about the food or service is perfectly fine, because talking about problems is a bonding experience on Venus. However on Mars, men tie their egos to the choices they make. This is never truer than in the case of a restaurant that they have chosen. Now if on the other hand, a woman says, “Wow this place is a real find! I love the way they do their chicken….” In a man’s mind, he’s scored major points. It’s as if he went into the kitchen and cooked that meal himself.

It may sound a little odd to a woman that a man would take such pride in the choices that he makes. But keep in mind: he is so intent on pleasing and impressing—on a first date particularly—that he simply cannot separate his date’s approval of him from her approval of the choices that he makes.

This is true if the date continues on to a movie, a concert, or any other event. To him, the experience she has determines how she feels about him and their time together.

2. Draw him out, but don’t leave him hanging.

The old advice, passed along from mothers to daughters, was that, typically, on a first date you should get him to talk about himself. You must have already noticed that, in most cases, that goes against the grain; that as a general rule, men are better at listening than speaking. Now of course, that is not to suggest that a woman show no curiosity about his life or his interests. The point is not to leave the burden of carrying a conversation on his shoulders because there is a good chance that will lead to a series of uncomfortable moments where he is just not sure what to say.

You can see this Martian/Venusian communication gap for yourself. Take a party with five couples. Often you’ll see the males gravitate to a TV set and they bond, mostly in silence, by watching a game together. Meanwhile the women will be busy in conversation over a dozen different topics.

On a first date especially, a woman should not attempt to test a man’s verbal skills, because they’ll come up short—and he’ll know that. This leaves him with the feeling that the date was not a success.

3. Keep it light, bright and gay.

While a woman wants to anticipate carrying the conversation, she should be careful not to focus on negative past experiences—particularly in dating. Males project themselves into situations that they hear about; so when a woman shares her past relationship disappointments, the guy may nod empathetically, but all the time he is thinking, “That sounds like me!”

Additionally, women should not look to use men as sounding boards. The natural instinct on Mars is to solve problems. Venusians share and empathize. Martians communicate with the aim of problem solving or impressing upon one another their unique point of view. That’s why men will so often ask in wonderment, “If you didn’t want my help, why did you tell me about this in the first place.” In other words, sharing for the sake of sharing is an alien concept on Mars.

In summary, a woman’s intention on a first, second, or third date is to be upbeat and positive. Do let him know that he can succeed in making you happy. Don’t make him feel tested or challenged. Whenever possible, do praise his choices, and don’t be critical based on some simplistic notion that “honesty is always the best policy.” Don’t place a boyfriend in the role of a girl friend. You’re not looking for another gal pal. You’re looking for Mr. Right.

The bottom line: Make it an experience you both enjoy.

If you want the relationship to blossom, be sure to let him know that he is capable of pleasing you. Success brings men back. If he gets the impression that he cannot please you, he’ll continue to look for a woman who he can.

John Gray is the author of the classic bestselling relationship advice book, MEN ARE FROM MARS, WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS.

Ten Steps to Successful Dating

Putting the zing back into your love life By Jo Price

Too many rules, sometimes not enough rules! Being single can be great fun but it isn't easy and it’s always nice to read about other people's views on the dating game.

I write because I want to share the general views on being single and dating. This is not a tried and tested formula.

There are definitely more than ten steps and maybe they should be points as all of these will not apply to every individual. The aim here is to provide a few useful tips and hints which will hopefully help someone make the right decision.

Step One

Never jump from one relationship to the next.

No matter how tempted you are. You need time reflect on the past relationship and resolve any issues that are likely to affect a new potential partner.

For example a friend of mine who shall remain nameless has never been single. Every relationship that ended a new one would begin within a matter of weeks. That was until recently after nine years of being in four different relationships back to back she finally realised that she would never find her life partner until she truly understood what she was looking for.

For too long she had taken advantage of a convenient opportunity. So now she is free and single and spending some time for the first time focusing on her.

Too often I have heard male and females alike say that the best way to get over a past relationship is to start a new one. I disagree all you are doing is delaying the grieving process and using the new partner as a diversion.

Step Two

There is a difference between knowing what you want and having unrealistic expectations.

A number of my black male friends have described first dates with some black women as grueling. Now, I know what it is like to feel like you don’t want to waste time with another man who is going to turn out like the last deadbeat, so we get to the nitty-gritty and fast.

However, if it’s real love that you are looking for why should how much a guy makes a year make any difference at this stage?

All that happens is that you give off the impression that you are a gold-digger. Ask questions that truly matter, find out what the person values are, where they see themselves in the next five years. Find out something that will bring you closer to knowing them.

Step Three

Ok, so you have been single for a while and for the umpteenth time you have been asked out by someone who really isn’t your type. Some people would argue that you should just go for it – it’s not like anyone else is asking!

I would advise against it. Successful dating means setting realistic match criteria. The person may be funny and might able to hold a decent conversation but so can your best friend. If you date someone that you are not really interested in, it will end in tears for both parties.

There was a guy who really adored a girl. This girl on the other hand felt that he was sweet but he would never get her knees to tremble as she just did not like him like that – he was not her type.

He was persistent and finally got her out on a date. They dated for a while but then she began cheating on him. This was out of character for her so she ended it because she hated the fact that she had turned into a person she didn’t even like.

He was devastated and so was she. A potentially good friendship ruined. Successful dating means dating the right person for you. Trust your instincts.

Step Four

Be Patient: This is while you’re on the look out for your next romantic encounter and while you are dating. Think of it this way; while you are single focus on the things that you neglected when you were in a relationship.

I know it sounds strange, but for me my first few weeks of being single I cherished the time I had to pamper myself. Taking the time to get my toes done, a facial, took a girly holiday.

Don’t rush things once you have started dating. I dated a guy once (who shall definitely remain nameless!) who wanted me all to himself within the first month. Said he loved me in the first two weeks and resented any time that I spent away from him.

Obviously that didn’t last. However it could have if he had taken things easy. By being too pushy all you are doing is spoiling a perfectly good opportunity to be happy with someone.

Everyone has individual tempos. If you find yourself with someone who is at a slightly different pace to you, adjust yours, as by forcing them to change theirs you run the risk of pushing them way.

Step Five

Keep things simple and fun! The key thing is to laugh and to get to know your date in a relaxed environment. Slowly introduce them to the things that you enjoy doing and things should naturally progress. Keep the vibe upbeat.

Yes, your last partner may have been a no good cheating son/daughter of a gun but is it really fair to lay that on the new person?

Being honest is essential but be too honest too soon and you will deter your potential partner I assure you.

Enjoy dating for what it is - dating. It is meeting people and socialising and spending time in the company of stimulating individuals.

Step Six

This may be little controversial and in my opinion should really be step one. Look in the mirror and judge yourself honestly. If you are dissatisfied with what you see, how on earth do you expect to impress the right person?

Step it up, get your act together. Begin a regime of looking your best. Join a gym, read health magazines, get fit and start a diet. Get your hair cut or styled and begin a new regime of good grooming or beauty treatment. Though it will not find you a date in itself, you will feel a million times more confident about yourself and confidence radiates beauty.

Step Seven

This is a step which will depend entirely on your values and what your long term goals are when dating. I would argue that be you male or female, never ever make yourself too available in the early stages.

People like mystery and the thrill of the chase when dating. In keeping with this do not sleep with your dates early on if you want them to progress, keep sex until later.

The longer a person is made to chase and fall for you within reason, the more likely that love may blossom. Peak too early and you have little left to offer and emotions may never have had the time to develop.

Step Eight

Find new interest then work out in advance where in your area you are likely to meet people and join gyms, drama/dance groups, anything where you are likely to meet potential partners. The kind of partners you are looking for.

Bars and clubs are good but if you are on the look out try and say sober as Mrs. Perfect by night may turn out to be an extra from the Adams Family by day!

Choose environments that you can feel natural in so that if you do meet someone they will get a true picture of you. I know it’s a clichรฉ but you will not meet people by staying at home in front of the TV.

Step Nine

The Internet is fast becoming one of the best and most accepted ways to meet people.

They call it online dating, but it should really be called online meeting, since you don't actually date until you physically get together. It is, however, a vast pot of interesting people and opportunities.

There are ways to meet people online safely and with great success! Don't rule out any method or avenue, and try them all: speed date, people at the gym, through friends, or online - even family set ups. Do it all!

Step Ten Be happy within yourself. If you are truly at peace real love will find you.

Fibroids

What are Fibroids?

Fibroid tumours are benign (non-cancerous) growths that develop in the wall of the uterus. They occur in 30-70% of women and are particularly common in Afro-Caribbeans. Whilst fibroids do not always cause trouble, abdominal swelling, heavy or prolonged bleeding and pressure symptoms on the bladder and bowel are common. They typically shrink after menopause when the level of oestrogen, the female hormone that circulates in the blood, decreases dramatically. However, menopausal women who are taking hormone replacement therapy may not experience relief of symptoms.
Fibroids range in size from that of a pea to the size of a melon. In some cases they can grow so big that the woman can look pregnant.

Symptoms of Fibroids
The commonest presentation is that of heavy menstrual period which may be associated with pain and could also lead to anaemia. Pressure symptoms from the size of the fibroid especially if the are resting on the bladder. This may result to frequency in emptying the bladder of urine. There may be pressure on the bowel leading to difficulties emptying the bowel. Maybe associated with pain during sexual intercourse and maybe a cause of repeated miscarriages of pregnancy. There could be recurrent pain in pregnancy which could necessitate admission to the hospital.

Diagnosis of Fibroids The diagnosis of fibroid can be made by Ultrasound (Transvaginal or abdominal), MRI, hysteroscopy (if submucous or fibroid polyp) or by laparoscopy. Ultrasound Transvaginal approach is better for smaller fibroids. A probe with a covering sheath is inserted in the vagina and this produces an image on the monitor (screen). The abdominal route is better for large fibroids. There may be need to drink water to fill the bladder before the abdominal scan. MRI This may be used in some cases for making diagnosis of fibroid; however, there are cost implications. Hysteroscopy This involves using a small telescope to view directly inside the uterine cavity. It could be performed under local or general anaesthesia depending on the circumstances. Laparoscopy This employs the use of a small telescope to view the abdominal and pelvic structures through the abdominal wall. It is generally performed under general anaesthesia.

Weight Loss and Muscle Building Tips For Women - Debunking Common Female Exercise Myths by Jamin Thompson

As a nutrition and fitness success coach, fitness model and self proclaimed "fitness guru" I have been approached several times by women in my gym asking me the best way to "tone up, get a flat tummy, lose cellulite, get a firm butt, etc.." the classic woman body complaints.
Most of them are shocked when I tell them that there is not a secret formula that the pros are keeping from the general public. It is simple, work hard and eat healthy. Be aware of what you put into your body and stay dedicated to your plan. This is the key to fitness success! The road will not be easy, but with the proper mindset and a solid plan, your destiny is in your hands.
In my experience, most women psych themselves out before they even set foot in the gym. Most of them are simply afraid to fail! This inherent fear of failure prevents many women from achieving their goals, and keeps them feeling down in the dumps. Instead of making excuses ladies, put your foot down and take a stand. Accept the fact that sacrifices will need to be made, and risks need to be taken. It is the black door principle.

As the legendary Black Door story goes: a soldier is captured by the enemy and is facing the firing squad at his execution. For his last wish, the execution officer gives him two options. He asks, would you like to die by the firing squad or would you choose to walk through that black door over there? The soldier, fearing that some horrible, evil death waits behind the black door, chooses the firing squad and is quickly executed. Afterwards, the execution officer is asked by his second in command, what was behind the black door. The execution officer replies, well it is freedom but nobody ever chooses it!
Make the choice. Determine who you want to be and figure out the best way to get there. Do not blame others for your own fear of commitment. The thing that we all fear most in life is committed failure, or trying our hardest and failing. However, you will never know what your true potential is unless you set your self-doubt aside and give it a shot.
Here is will try to dispel a female training myth that is widespread in many gyms these days. This is a classic myth that holds most women back from achieving their fitness goals. Hopefully I can shed some light on this fallacy, and offer some insights on how women can effectively transform their bodies.
The Myth: Lifting Weights will make me look Manly.
I think that most women believe this as an absolute fact! However, in reality, lifting weights will not make you develop muscle like a man! Women do not have enough muscle building hormones that can generate a lot of increased muscle mass. Men have about 25 times more of these essential muscle building hormones than women do. Breathe easy ladies! The women who try to build muscle, and try to do so religiously, have a terribly hard time accomplishing this because the odds are stacked against them. In order for an average woman to pack on serious muscle, she would need a technically sound training routine, a custom individualized nutrition program, and vigorous dietary supplementation.
Hormones:
Women and men were born with many hormones flowing throughout our bodies. The main ones are called DHEA, estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone. We all share these four essential hormones, however men and women have different concentrations of each. Both men and women have hormones coursing through their bodies. Men have much higher concentrations of testosterone and DHEA, and women have higher concentrations of estrogen and progesterone. The reason many men are able to build quality muscle mass is because they possess high concentrations of testosterone. Now you may be wondering how the heck these bodybuilder type women have way more muscle than most guys and are bigger and more ripped than ever. The answer is: They take prescription doses of testosterone and other drugs to help them build muscle. Do not do this ladies it is bad for your health!
One of the great benefits to resistance training is that it increases lean muscle tissue. Lean muscle tissue has a thermogenic effect, which means it burns fat. Therefore the more muscle you add, the more fat you burn at rest. An extra five pounds of muscle can translate into 10 pounds of fat loss. This translates into an increase in your resting metabolism RMR and a leaner, and sexier you. Recent studies indicate that for each pound of muscle gained, you will burn 35 to 50 more calories per day. So, if you gain three pounds of muscle, you will burn about 40 more calories per pound, which equates to 120 additional calories per day, which translates into roughly 3,720 additional calories per month and ultimately results in a weight loss of 10 to 12 pounds in a single year!
There are many benefits to resistance training. Building muscle is just one of the benefits, but definitely not the only one. Most women want to have the sexy, toned, fit look that they see in fitness magazines. In order to achieve this desirable look, you must incorporate moderate strength training into your workout routine and have a solid nutrition program. Do not get caught up doing mindless cardio on the stair stepper machine for hours, and jumping from fad diet to fat diet. This is not how it works! Add a few pounds of muscle and burn fat the easy way.
Bone Health:
We have all seen the studies that many women are at increased risk for osteoporosis. Strength and resistance based training is a good way to reduce your risk of this devastating disease. Osteoporosis reduces bone mass, and causes weak bone structure. Some of the risks associated with this disease are: an increased vulnerability to fractures of the hips, wrists, and spine. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, 28 million Americans suffer from this disease, 80 percent of which are women. In fact, statistics show that over 60% women over the age of 55 will suffer from an osteoporosis-related fracture during their lifetime. Ladies, please protect yourself now and incorporate a resistance based training program into your arsenal. Your body will appreciate it later in life.
Conclusion
I sincerely hope that you have benefited from the information in this article. Remember ladies, ditch the old wives tales and age old myths about fitness training. Incorporate some resistance based exercises into your routine for maximum mind, health, and body benefit!

Diabetes

Diabetes is having a devastating effect on the African American community. Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death in African Americans and their death rates are twenty seven percent higher than whites.

Over 2.8 million African Americans have diabetes and one third of them don’t know they have the disease. In addition, twenty five percent of African Americans between the ages of 65 – 74 have diabetes and one in four African American women, over the age of 55, have been diagnosed with the disease.

The cause of diabetes is a mystery, but researchers believe that both genetics and environmental factors play roles in who will develop the disease.

Heredity

Researchers believe that African Americans and African Immigrants are predisposed to developing diabetes. Research suggests that African Americans and recent African immigrants have inherited a "thrifty gene" from their African ancestors.

This gene may have enabled Africans to use food energy more efficiently during cycles of feast and famine. Now, with fewer cycles of feast and famine, this gene may make weight control more difficult for African Americans and African Immigrants.

This genetic predisposition, coupled with impaired glucose tolerance, is often associated with the genetic tendency toward high blood pressure. People with impaired glucose tolerance have higher than normal blood glucose levels and are at a higher risk for developing diabetes.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes, commonly know as “sugar diabetes”, is a condition that occurs when the body is unable to properly produce or use insulin. Insulin is needed by the body to process sugar, starches and other foods into energy. Diabetes is a chronic condition for which there is no known cure; diabetes is a serious disease and should not be ignored.

Diabetics often suffer from low glucose levels (sugar) in their blood. Low blood sugar levels can make you disorientated, dizzy, sweaty, hungry, have headaches, have sudden mood swings, have difficulty paying attention, or have tingling sensations around the mouth.

Types of Diabetes

Pre-diabetes is a condition that occurs when a person's blood glucose levels is higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of type II diabetes. Pre-diabetes can cause damage to the heart and circulatory system, but pre-diabetes can often be controlled by controlling blood glucose levels. By controlling pre-diabetes you can often prevent or delay the onset of Type II diabetes.

Type I or juvenile-onset diabetes usually strikes people under the age of 20, but can strike at any age. Five to ten percent of African Americans who are diagnosed with diabetes are diagnosed with this type of the disease. Type I diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body produces little or no insulin and this type of diabetes must be treated with daily insulin injections.

Type II or adult onset diabetes is responsible for ninety to ninety-five percent of diagnosed diabetes cases in African Americans. Type II results from a condition where the body fails to properly use insulin. According to the American Diabetes Association, “Type II is usually found in people over 45, who have diabetes in their family, who are overweight, who don't exercise and who have cholesterol problems.” In the early stages it can often be controlled with lifestyle changes, but in the later stages diabetic pills or insulin injections are often needed. Pregnancy related diabetes or gestational diabetes can occur in pregnant women. Gestational diabetes is often associated with high glucose blood levels or hyperglycemia. Gestational diabetes affects about four percent of all pregnant women. The disease usually goes away after delivery, but women who suffer from gestational diabetes are at a higher risk for developing diabetes later in life.

Symptoms of Diabetes

The most common symptoms of diabetes include:

excessive urination including frequent trips to the bathroom

increased thirst

increased appetite

blurred vision

unusual weight loss

increased fatigue

irritability

Complications from Diabetes

Diabetes can lead to many disabling and life threatening complications. Strokes, blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, and amputations are common complications that effect African Americans who have diabetes.

Kidney Disease

“Diabetes is the second leading cause of end stage kidney disease in African Americans, accounting for about thirty percent of the new cases each year,” says the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois. Up to twenty-one percent of people who develop diabetes will develop kidney disease.

Amputations

Diabetes is the leading cause of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations in the United States. More than sixty percent of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations in America occur among people with diabetes and African Americans are almost three times more likely to have a lower limb amputated due to diabetes than whites. According to Center for Disease Control (CDC), about 82,000 non-traumatic lower-limb amputations were performed among people with diabetes in 2001.

Blindness

African Americans are twice as likely to suffer from diabetes related blindness. Diabetics can develop a condition called “Diabetic Retinopathy”, a disease affecting the blood vessels of the eye, which can lead to impaired vision and blindness. Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in people from 20 – 74 years of age and up to 24,000 people loose their sight each year because of diabetes.

Heart Disease

People with diabetes are up to four times more likely to develop heart disease as people who don’t have diabetes. Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) is more common in diabetics and can lead to increased risk of heart attacks, stroke, and poor circulation throughout the body.

Diabetes Risk Factors

You have a greater risk for developing diabetes if you have any of the following:

Obesity

Family history of diabetes

Pre-diabetes

Low physical activity

Age greater than 45 years

High blood pressure

High blood levels of triglycerides

HDL cholesterol of less than 35

Previous diabetes during pregnancy or baby weighing more than 9 pounds

Diabetes has had a devastating effect on the African American community; it is the fifth leading cause of death and second leading cause of end stage kidney disease in African Americans.

African Americans suffer from complications from diabetes at a much higher rate than the rest of the population. African Americans are three times more likely to have a lower limb amputated because of diabetes and twice as likely to suffer from diabetes related blindness.

If you have any of the diabetes risk factors you should contact your physician and have a blood glucose test. Also discuss with your physician lifestyle changes you can take to lower your chances of developing diabetes.

Sickle cell anemia

Sickle cell disease primarily affects people of African, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Asian Indian ancestry. There is also a growing segment in the Latino-American population particularly those of Caribbean, Central American, and South American ancestry. In the United States one out of every 400 births has this disease. The most common type of sickle cell disease is sickle cell anemia. In our companion article "Understanding Sickle Cell Disease" we cover a lot of material about the cause and symptoms of this disease. The following paragraph is a very brief overview.

All types of sickle cell disease are caused by a genetic change in the hemoglobin portion of the red blood cell. Hemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying protein inside the red blood cell. Normal red blood cells are oval and flexible. Red blood cells in sickle cell disease have a tendency to reshape themselves into rod-like structures that resemble the curved blade of a sickle; thus, the term sickle cell. Sickle cells have a shorter life span than normal red blood cells. This results in chronic anemia and reduced oxygen to the tissues of the body. In addition, sickle cells are less flexible than normal red blood cells. This presents a problem since they can become trapped in the small blood vessels preventing blood flow to the body's tissues. This compromise in the delivery of oxygen to the tissues results in pain and potential damage to the associated tissues and organs.

Recent Research Highlights the Importance of Nitric Oxide!
Researchers at Duke University and Howard Hughes Medical Institute recently discovered one of the keys to the cause of pain in sickle cell disease. Their findings were reported in the January 31, 2005. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Their research showed that when normal red blood cells move through the arteries they release a signaling molecule that tells the arterial walls to expand. The signaling molecule is nitric oxide. Nitric oxide causes the smooth muscle in the blood vessel wall to relax which opens up the vessel to allow the cells to pass through.

For those with sickle cell anemia, when the red blood cells are distorted into the sickle cell shape, the researchers at Duke University discovered that the walls of the arteries don't expand. This distorted shape of the sickle cells, combined with the fact that they tend to clump together, ends up blocking blood flow through these small arteries and capillaries. The Duke researchers noted that as the blood pulses, the walls of the arteries didn't expand like they do with normal red blood cells. Their research also noted that the degree of nitric oxide deficiency directly correlated with symptom severity. This means that the less nitric oxide produced the greater the pain. This Duke/HHMI study found that when nitric oxide was administered to people with sickle cell anemia their symptoms were relieved. One of the conclusions from this study was that abnormal nitric oxide processing may be the real cause of sickle cell circulatory restrictions. In addition to the Duke/HHMI study, several other studies found that the administration of nitric oxide to people with sickle cell anemia relieved symptoms.
In 1998 the Nobel Prize in Medicine was award to the researchers in nitric oxide. Part of what came out of their research was that the primary pathway for creating nitric oxide in the body came from an essential amino acid called L-arginine. L-arginine is called an essential amino acid because your body cannot produce it so it must be brought into your body through your diet. L-arginine is found in foods like milk, cheese, yogurt, meat, and other proteins.

The world's leading researcher in L-arginine is Dr. Ann de wees Allen. Dr. Allen has over 20 years of experience with L-arginine and her research has led to some breakthrough discoveries that center on the remarkable properties of L-arginine. In fact, L-arginine is considered one of the most important neutraceuticals ever developed and is referred to by scientists as the Miracle Molecule. Columbia University refers to L-arginine as the "MAGIC BULLET" for the cardiovascular system. To be effective and safe, L-arginine must utilize a low-glycemic method. Through much research and development, Dr. Allen determined that an L-arginine molecule attached to a kiwi glycoside (from the Kiwi plant) will create the formulation that allows L-arginine to cross the proper barriers as well as allow it to be taken orally without the taste buds rejecting it. Dr. Allen formulated a product called ProArgi-9 that was granted patent #6,608,109. With this patent the FDA and FTC allowed Dr. Allen to make 15 legal claims for ProArgi-9, and legal claim #14 is "help produce Nitric Oxide."
Two prominent researchers became aware of Dr. Allen's work and product. Dr. Clair Francomano (former Chief of the Medical Genetics Branch at the National Institutes of Medicine, National Genome Research Institute, and Chief of Human Genetics for the Laboratory of Genetics at the National Institute on Aging) and Dr. Randall Maxey (renowned U.S. cardiologist and President, National Medical Association Research Foundation for Ethnic-Related Diseases) approached Dr. Allen regarding her patented delivery system for L-arginine and its ability to create nitric oxide safely and effectively in the human body. Because of their experience and research in genetics they were aware on an additional genetic polymorphism common to the African-American community. Many African-Americans produce too much of an enzyme called arginase. In the bloodstream, arginase destroys L-arginine so that it is no longer available for the production of nitric oxide.
With the help of Dr. Clair Francomano and Dr. Randall Maxey, Dr. Allen was able to genetically engineer a low-glycemic delivery system for L-arginine specifically designed for the African-American community. This product is call ENCODE. It is designed to help provide the body with a high level and quality of L-arginine so that proper production of nitric oxide can be achieved with the resulting health benefits that can come from nitric oxide.

14 Steps to Help Those With Sickle Cell Disease! Understanding the past and most current research will help to chart a plan of action to help those who suffer from sickle cell disease. Please remember that these steps are for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice, examination, diagnosis, or treatment. Always seek the advice of a physician or other qualified healthcare provider with any questions you may have regarding this or any medical condition. Never disregard professional medical advice or delay in seeking it because of something you have read in this article. If you think you may have a medical emergency, always call your doctor or 911 immediately.

Step 1 - Proper hydration: It is estimated that 75% of Americans have mild, chronic dehydration. This will affect blood flow so getting the proper amount of water on a daily basis is critically important. It must be pure water. Pop, coffee, diet soda, alcohol, or other doctored beverages to not count. Your body must replace 2-3 quarts of water everyday. As a rule of thumb, for every 15 lbs of weight, you need 8 ounces (1 cup) of water.

Step 2 - Stay warm: Cold reduces blood flow because capillaries constrict. If you live in a cold environment, then take extra precaution to keep your extremities, especially fingers and toes, properly protected.

Step 3 - Avoid high altitudes: Geographic locations with high elevations should be avoided due to the reduce level of oxygen in the atmosphere.

Step 4 - Exercise: Intense exercise should be avoided but mild to moderate aerobic exercise can be a benefit. Exercise improves blood flow and can produce collateral capillary beds that can aid in providing alternative pathways for blood flow when an arterial pathway becomes blocked. Before starting an exercise program, you should always consult your physician.

Step 5 - L-arginine supplementation: The body utilizes L-arginine to create nitric oxide which is necessary for the proper function of the cardiovascular system especially in the control of the elasticity of the arterial walls. Now, before you go out and start buying L-arginine supplements you need to be aware of the dark side of this amino acid. L-arginine ingested in its pure form tastes terrible and will simply go into the stomach, move into the intestinal tract and then into the gut, negating most of its benefits. There is only one way for L-arginine supplement to be safe and effective and that is in a powder form with a specific glycoside rider. By itself, L-arginine can have some serious side effects like: increasing free-radical brain damage, activation of the herpes simplex virus and reduced sperm motility. This is why L-arginine is also called the "double-edged sword." Because L-arginine is a blind amino acid it must be attached to a rider to properly direct it to the area of the body where it will have an impact. This rider must use a low-glycemic method.

Step 6 - Organic germanium: Organic germanium was first synthesized 20 years ago. It is a trace mineral that helps support the immune system. Its many beneficial attributes include oxygen enrichment, free-radical scavenging, and heavy-metal detoxification. Organic germanium is also known to be a rejuvenator and aid in increasing stamina, endurance, energy, and heart muscle tone. Toxicological studies have documented its rapid absorption and elimination from the body. But, as a precaution, you should discuss this with both your physician and pharmacist especially if you are on any type of medication.

Step 7 - Rest: It is important to get adequate rest since stress can have a negative effect on your overall health and wellness as well as lower your immune system.

Step 8 - Support your immune system: There is so much that could be said in this area. Increasing your consumption of antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables would be an important first step. Daily consumption of at least 500 mg of vitamin C would help both the immune system and liver function.

Step 9 - Support your liver: Again, there is much that could be said in this area. Adequate amounts of green leafy vegetables with proper water intake are two good first steps to help the liver. Taking 500 mg of vitamin C will help increase the rate of synthesis of glutathione which is a major component in liver detoxification.

Step 10 - Avoid people with colds and flu: Try not to place yourself in situations that allow for infections to occur. This may require you to use a mask at times if your work or school environment is compromised with illness issues.

Step 11 - Immunizations: Stay up-to-date with the proper immunizations needed. Work with your health care provider to set up a schedule so that all the proper steps are taken to stay on top of this area.

Step 12 - Folic acid supplementation: Folic acid is a necessary component for the production of red blood cells. The recommended daily amount for adults is 400 micrograms and 600 micrograms in pregnancy. If you are thinking about taking a larger amount, then you should discuss this with both your physician and pharmacist. Step 13 - Support groups: Because of the emotional challenges of this disease it always helps to find a support group to share frustrations, challenges, hopes, and successes.

Step 14 - Family planning: Due to the genetic nature of sickle cell disease, it is always helpful to discuss options with a family practitioner who has experience in genetic counseling.
Because of the genetic nature of sickle cell disease there is no pill to cure it. This can leave individuals and family members feeling helpless in their battle against the symptoms of this disease. Discuss these 14 steps with a qualified physician to develop a plan of action that will help to empower you to have better control over sickle cell disease.

Teeth Whitening

Virtually everyone wanting to brighten their smile can benefit from teeth whitening. Patients with teeth that are discolored due to age, smoking or other extrinsic staining factors are excellent candidates for teeth whitening. Research indicates that teeth whitening is completely effective in more than 78% of people. As teeth whitening continues to grow in popularity, research continues into all types of whitening systems.

Teeth whitening is not permanent, and works by removing the organic materials in the enamel by dissolving them with a peroxide derivative. Also, teeth whitening is only effective if there is a lot of enamel.

There are two principle forms of teeth whitening: professional whitening and teeth whitening kits.

Professional Teeth Whitening

The most effective and safest method of teeth whitening is the dentist-supervised procedure. First, the dentist will determine whether you are a candidate for teeth whitening and what type of whitening system would provide the best results. The dentist should also go over what you personally can expect for your individual situation. Before the teeth whitening treatment, most dentists clean the teeth, fill any cavities, and make sure the patient's gums are healthy.

Dentists will usually advise trying teeth whitening first, to avoid the need for more complex cosmetic work. Complications that can occur in professional teeth whitening are infrequent and are usually minor in nature. Overall, teeth whitening under professional supervision is an effective method for whitening the teeth.

As seen in InStyle Magazine: professional whitening kits and gel at prowhiteteeth.com Idol White is a good whitening tool, have a look.

teethwhiteningexpress.com check this website it's good too.

Teeth Whitening Kits

An alternative method to professional teeth whitening is to use a teeth whitening system or kit.
