Understanding Swine Flu Outbreak: Questions and Answers

By John Lauerman

April 27 (Bloomberg) -- Swine flu, a virus that normally infects pigs, has been detected in people in Mexico, the U.S., New Zealand, Canada, and the U.K. Health officials around the world are checking to see whether infections have occurred in their countries, and readying measures to prevent its spread.

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about swine flu. The information is drawn from the data released by the World Health Organization in Geneva and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

Q: What is swine flu? A: Influenza is a virus that infects people, birds, pigs and other animals such as ferrets. Swine flu, or swine influenza, is a form of the virus that normally infects pigs. There are many forms of flu, and the different varieties have the ability to exchange genes with one another. The form of flu that originated in Mexico is a genetic mixture of viruses that have been seen in pigs, birds and people. It’s being called a swine flu because the overall structure of the virus is of the type that affects pigs, said Keiji Fukuda, a WHO official.

Q: How do people catch swine flu? A: Studies are still ongoing on how this particular swine flu is transmitted. Flu is generally transmitted through the respiratory tract. Droplets of infected body fluids can carry flu when people cough or sneeze. Studies indicate that masks called N95 respirators that, when properly used, filter germs from the breath and hamper the spread of flu. Neither contact with pigs nor eating pork has been linked to the spread of the flu, Fukuda said today. Still, health researchers are working to establish that the virus is spreading from person-to-person.

Q: What are the symptoms of swine flu? A: About one to four days usually elapse between the time a person is infected and the onset of symptoms. Influenza normally causes symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, headaches and body aches, fever, chills, and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea. Swine flu causes the same symptoms, and may be difficult to distinguish from other strains of flu and respiratory illnesses. Severe cases of flu that lead to death are normally seen in very young and very old people whose immune systems are too weak to fight off the virus. Adults with severe illness may also have difficulty breathing, dizziness, confusion, or severe vomiting and diarrhea.

Q: How can I tell if my child is sick? A: Children who are breathing abnormally fast or slowly may have respiratory illness. Bluish skin indicates a need for quick attention. Children who are abnormally sluggish and sleepy, irritable, or have fever or rash may also need attention.

Q: Have there been outbreaks of swine flu before? A: Yes. Health officials said in 1976 that an outbreak of swine flu in people might lead to a pandemic. Widespread vaccination was carried out in the U.S. before experts determined that the virus was not dangerous enough to cause a pandemic. Swine flu occasionally infects people in the U.S. without causing large outbreaks. From 2005 through January 2009, there were 12 reported swine flu cases in the U.S. None of them caused deaths.

Q: Why are health officials concerned about the outbreak of swine flu? A: When flu viruses mix their genes with one another, they can take on new forms. New flu viruses are harder for the immune system to defend against. With little or no opposition from the immune system, they can grow quickly and invade many tissues and organs. They may also set off a harmful immune overreaction in the body, called a “cytokine storm,” that may be lethal in itself. The swine flu virus from Mexico may have the ability to spread quickly and kill people, possibly causing a worldwide pandemic, according to the World Health Organization. Researchers are conducting studies right now to determine how easily the virus spreads in people and how dangerous it is.

Q: What’s a flu pandemic? A: Flu pandemics occur when new influenza viruses emerge that spread quickly and few people have immunity to them. While influenza viruses were only discovered about a century ago, researchers believe flu pandemics hit about twice or three times each century. Some pandemics are relatively mild, killing just a few million people globally. The most severe flu pandemic on record was the 1918 Spanish Flu, and researchers estimate it killed about 50 million people around the world.

Q: Are there any similarities between the swine flu and earlier pandemic viruses? A: Flu viruses are classified by two proteins on their surface, called H for hemagglutinin and N for neuraminidase. Both the swine flu found in Mexico and the 1918 Spanish Flu viruses are of the H1N1 subtype. Both viruses appear to have originated in animals; researchers believe the Spanish flu spread to people from birds. The two viruses are not identical, and there are still many genetic differences between them that researchers are studying.

Q: Do all H1N1 viruses cause pandemics? A: Not all H1N1 viruses cause pandemics. H1N1 descendants of the Spanish Flu virus continue to circulate in people and sometimes cause outbreaks of seasonal flu.

Q: Is there a vaccine against the swine flu from Mexico? A: Flu vaccines generally contain a dead or weakened form of a circulating virus. The vaccine prepares the body’s immune system to fend off a true infection. For the vaccine to work, it must match the circulating, “wild-type” virus relatively closely. There is no vaccine currently that exactly matches the swine flu. However, if the virus is sufficiently similar to circulating forms of H1N1 flu that are included in current vaccines, they may offer some limited protection from swine flu. While U.S. health officials are investigating this, the possibilities for this protection are poor, they said yesterday on a telephone call.

In addition, millions of people in the U.S. were vaccinated against swine flu in 1976. While that was not the same strain of flu as the one from Mexico, people who got the 1976 vaccine may get some limited protection from the currently circulating virus. Health officials may do some research on this issue as well.

Vaccine makers have contacted the World Health Organization about obtaining samples of the virus needed to make a vaccine. Making flu vaccine can take three to six months, depending on the type of manufacturing used.

Q: Are there drugs that treat swine flu? A: Roche Holding AG’s Tamiflu and GlaxoSmithKline Plc’s Relenza both have activity against swine flu. The U.S. has released its stockpile of Tamiflu to treat people with swine flu. Flu viruses sometimes develop resistance to antiviral drugs. The human form of H1N1 that’s currently circulating is resistant to Roche’s Tamiflu (not Relenza). If the two viruses were to exchange genes, the swine flu might become resistant, too.

Q: How else can I protect myself from swine flu? A: Personal hygiene measures, such as avoiding people who are coughing or sneezing and frequent hand-washing, may prevent flu infection. Those who aren’t health professionals should avoid contact with sick people, or those who are coughing or sneezing. People who get sick with flu symptoms should stay home. Studies have suggested that closing schools, theaters, and canceling gatherings in the early stages of a pandemic can limit its spread. Such measures would likely take place if health officials determine that the virus is spreading quickly enough and is deadly enough to cause a pandemic.

Acne fighting manual

If you're dealing with acne, large pores, hyperpigmentation, oily skin, uneven skin or just want more information you've come to the right place. This is just my 2cents, I've been dealing with acne for years and finally I've won and my skin is clear, apart from the one or two pimples during my periods.

I've tried prescription drugs and cream which worked really well but were very strong, far too strong for me and I was worried for my health. So for the last few years I've tried ot find natural remedies, starting with what I put in my body.

First and foremost, WATER is the most important thing we can do to keep our skin clear and beautiful. Whatever your skin problem, you NEED water, it is ESSENTIAL. Water not only flushes toxins and impurities out of our bodies but it also helps our skin looking luminous and healthy.

The recommended amount varies according to the source, but many suggest drinking half your weight in ounces of water. (Example: If you weight 80 lbs., drink 40 oz. of water since 80/2 = 40), or dry drinking 10 glasses a day. Sugary drinks and carbonated beverages are NOT water. Green/white/herbal tea on the other hand are wonderful antioxidants.

DIET Yes, we really are what we eat, and the proof is in our skin. A poor diet can cause problem for even the best skin. Processed foods high in preservatives and hyrdrogenated oils are to be avoided at all cost.

Here's a list of the main foods to avoid and why:

Dairy products: Many people are lactose intolerant and don't even realise it and it often manifests itself as acne. Dairy products are also very hard on the digestive system which is another cause of acne. The hormones found in many dairy products can cause skin problems ranging from acne to dermatitis not to forget eczema.

Meat: Contrary to common believe animal protein is not that good for us and should be eaten in moderation. Meat is difficult to digest, and it can take several days for us to digest it properly, while it putrifies and creates toxins. Our digestive system is simply not designed to digest the amount of meat most of us consume.

Human digestive tracts are long and folded so that we can get the most nutrition from the food we consume. Meat stays trapped in the folds of our digestive system and this leads to a buildup of toxins that are eventually expelled through our skin in the form of acne and other problems.

Refined carbohydrates: Eating refined carbs and sugar induce a surge in insulin and an insulin-like growth factor. This in turns leads to an excess of male hormones which encourages the skin to produce large amounts of sebum (oil). Excessive sebum is one of the primary causes of acne since too much sebum is a breeding ground for bacteria. Bad food create a buildup of toxins, detox and liver cleansing are great ways to remove toxins from the system and clear the skin quickly. Fasting is another wonderful skin-clearing strategy since it gives the digestive system a well earned break.

Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. The vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables are ESSENTIAL to healthy skin. I can't think of a single fruit that doesn't contain some ingredient that helps skin thrive. If you don't like eating fruits and vegetables, juicing them or making fresh smoothies is a great way to consume them.

SLEEP: Sleep is nature's way to help our body repair itself. Without sufficient rest, our body cannot effectively repair itself and our skin often shows it. A lack of rest often shows up as blemishes, enlarged pores, bags under the eyes, dark circles, and shallow skin. In addition to tremendously reducing stress which in turn reduces acne-causing hormones, sleep keeps the immune system intact so it can effectively fight off bacteria and infections.

EXERCISE: Exercise is great for the skin because it increases the blood flow to the skin and allows oxygen to get to the cells more efficiently. Light sweating will help clean the pores from the inside, and exercise will improve the fitness of the internal organs. Also, exercise is wonderful for regulating hormones.

STRESS: Most of our problems such as hair loss, skin problems, loss of appetite and other ailments are due to stress. It is a given but we must really try to avoid stress as much as possible. Stress provoks our body to release cortisol, which is an acne-causing chemical. Whatever the remedy is: exercise, sleeping, writing, meditating, talking to a close friend, having a coach, we have to minimise and manage our stress level.

TOPICAL HELP: If you have oily skin don't try and strip your skin in an effort to balance it, the only thing you will get is more sebum (oil), when the skin is stripped of its oil it compensates and produce more of it. The only way to regulate sebum is to maintain a healthy diet, exercise and drink a lot of water. Use gentle cleansing products, and use natural products that are free from harsh ingredients such as alcohol, isopropyl myristate, lanolin, sodium lauryl (laureth) sulfate, propylene glycol, mineral oil, and parabensso to keep your skin healthy and moisturised.

Tea tree oil has been found to be an effective astringent without drying as much as commercial astringents.

Exfoliants are important to a good skin care regimen. They get rid of dead skin and remove surface debris that can clog pores. Too much exfoliation can damage the skin and leave it raw and vulnerable.

Facial masks are a great way to absorb excess oil and refine pores. Clay based masks using kaolin or sea kelp powder are among the best ones. Steaming the face with boiling water (with a few drops of tea tree or peppermint oil) prior to using your mask will help draw out impurities and shrink pores. Do NOT pick at or squeeze acne blemishes and pimples or you will spread infection and push the plug deeper into the skin, and be left with your scars. Applying tea tree oil to the blemishes will help speed healing. Scars can be effectively treated with lavender oil or rosehip essential oil diluted in almond oil. Coconut oil is also great for improving your skin's texture and reducing red/black scarring. Aloe vera gel also reduces scars and hyperpigmentation.

Other methods such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and laser treatments can also fade hyperpigmentation and restore skin's smooth texture.

Always use a good sunscreen to protect the skin from the sun's harmful rays (even in winter)that can age the skin and cause problems with uneven tone. Blocked pores lead to blackheads, these should not be forcibly extracted. Instead, the excess oil and dead skin should be removed from the skin in order to eliminate blackheads. Gently exfoliating regularly will help keep blackheads away.

Professional facials are typically good for the skin but extractions should be gentle or it can result in ruptures, scarring (particularly in black women) and enlarged pores. I would recommend you go to a professional who is used to dealing with you skin type/colour.

OTHER TIPS

-Don't touch your skin throughout the day unless you've just washed your hands. Otherwise, you're spreading dirt and bacteria from your hands to your skin.

-Change pillowcases and bed linens regularly as they touch the face throughout the night. Oils from our face and hair can contribute to skin problems.

-Take a good multivitamin every day to be sure your body & skin are receiving the necessary nutrients for healthy functioning.

-Wear makeup that is oil-free and are non-comedogenic. Use disposable sponges to avoid the transfer of bacteria. Be sure to wash makeup brushes once a week to keep them clean and free of dirt and bacteria.

-Try drinking aloe vera juice to boost the immune system and heal the digestive system.

-Flaxseed oil, Echinacea, MSM, olive leaf extract, and evening primrose oil are all great supplements.

-Milk of Magnesia makes a great mask for minimizing pores and smoothing skin's texture.

-Raw honey makes a great face mask. Simply apply raw honey and leave it for 10-15 minutes. Then rinse with warm water and pat dry. Honey's antiseptic properties will help clear blemishes and maintain the skin's moisture balance.

-Aspirin mask are also wonderful to reduce blemishes.

Ladies, consistency and patience are the keys!

Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama's hair is FIERCE!!! Michelle Obama is natural and her hair is stunning, healthy, shiny, has body, life and more movement than most women who have their hair relaxed!

Johnny Wright, Mrs. Obama's stylist, was happy to share some of the technique he uses on Michelle's hair.

Step One: ShampooApply a reasonable amount of shampoo (preferably a moisturizing one) to wet hair and work into a lather for one minute. Rinse hair thoroughly with lukewarm water and repeat.

YOOX UK

Step Two: ConditionAfter shampooing, towel-blot the hair. Apply a generous amount of conditioner to the hair, comb through with a wide tooth comb, and place a plastic cap on the hair. Sit under the dryer for 10-15 minutes. Rinse hair thoroughly with lukewarm water for one to two minutes then turn the water temperature to cool and rinse. This will help seal the cuticles.

Step Three: ProtectWhen the conditioner is completely rinsed out, apply a small amount (a little more for coarse-haired girls like yours truly) of heat protectant evenly throughout the hair.

Step Four: StraightenSection the hair in fours. Starting from the back, blow dry the hair on low with a paddle/round brush. Working in small 1" by 1.5" sections, flat iron the hair on medium (about 250-300 degrees).I truly hope this helps anyone who is Natural, transitioning, or stretching.

Steam treatment

Here's a technique to do your steam treatment at home:

You will need:
2 Microfibre Hair Turban Wrap towels Cleaning Gloves 2 plastic bags or plastic Wrap. Heating cap or Hooded Dryer (VERY Important -there needs to be a heat source......) Bottled Water ( Let's stay as far away from the Chlorine as possible)
Dunk the turbies in cold water... put em in a Glass bowl and heat em in the microwave till they are hot.use the cleaning Gloves - to Wring out one of the turbies. Put in on your head.... immediately put on cap.Wring out the next turbie. Put it on top of the plastic.Wrap the last turbie in plastic.I wrapped this tight - so I could get the heat cap on.
Sit for 30 mins. When I took the heat cap off - STEAM!!!!!!Spray or rinse with COLD water - to seal the Cuticle!!!

Baking soda and lemon

Naturals, I have read somewhere that there is yet another way to loosen your curls without resorting to chemical relaxer.
Many combinations can be used and all of them seem to work leaving natural nappy hair silky, shiny, soft and easy to detangled:
Sea salt +  Baking soda + lemon juice + conditioner
It may also be that the kind of conditioner you use makes some sort of difference.
Here you go ladies, let me know what you think.

Natural relaxer - Coconut & Lime

This is for you natural ladies (and guys)!

To change your look temporarily and arbhore a straight hairdo use the Coconut & Lime relaxer. It is all natural products, no chemicals. It's not permanent so you can wash it out when you want to see your beautiful curls back. It has to be said that because it's all natural and not permanent it will not relax your hair bone-straight, especially if you're 4A/B. But it's an excellent way to loosen your curls and soften your hair.

Here’s my way to make the treatment:

1 tin of coconut milk

2 tablespoons of coconut oil (or EVOO)

4 tablespoons of lime juice

2-3 tablespoons of corn flour

Put the corn flour in a bowl, slowly add the coconut milk until it becomes creamy then add the oil and whisk until well blended, add the lime juice. If you find the mixture is still too thin add a bit more corn flour. If the coconut milk you have is very thick to start with, you may leave the corn flour out altogether.

Apply the mixture to your hair in sections, ensure it is evenly covered do not comb. Cover with a plastic cap then under a steam cap or cover your head with a wet towel and sit with a hooded dryer on your head for ½ hour to an hour. You may also sleep with the mixture on your hair.

You can freeze in remaining product.

Then shampoo the mixture out of your hair and proceed to deep condition as usual with an ultra moisturising conditioner. use cold water for your final rinse to close the hair cuticles and seal the moisture.

Style as usual and flat iron for straighter look.

Caramel treatments

Caramel treatment makes your hair hubber soft. It can be used on relaxed and natural hair. You can purchase it or make it yourself.

Here are the benefits:
- It strengthens your hair
- It helps to loosen your curl pattern
All you need to make it yourself is:
- honey
- olive oil
- banana
- molasses
- ACV
- wheat germ oil
Mix the lot using a blender until creamy and smooth, once done apply to your hair with an applicator brush (or your finger whichever you prefer) as if you are applying a relaxer, wrap hair in plastic and keep it at least an hour or overnight.
This mixture cannot be stored, like all homemade concoctions, its shelf-live is limited. I would recommend you use within the hour for best results.
Enjoy!

10 steps to healthier longer relaxed hair

This blog is for black women in the UK and in Europe. It is dedicated to help black women retain their hair length and get long hair. Yes, black women can have long hair, it doesn't have to stay at shoulder length forever.
Relaxed hair doesn't have to be damaged. you can achieve waistlength hair even if you hair is relaxed.
10 easy step to help achieve healthy long relaxed hair:
- Condition twice daily with water based leave-in conditioner. An easy way is to mix glycerin and water.
- Seal the moisture with light oils such as olive oil, jojoba oil, coconut Oil , avocado oil , oil castor, almond oil or other. Seal with oil everytime you condition your hair (twice daily), just put a small amont in you palm and rub on your ends. The ends of your hair is the most fragile part of your hair because it's the oldest and driest part. - Co-wash at least twice a weekly. Co-washing is washing your hair with conditioner (no shampoo)
- Deep condition everytime you wash your hair with shampoo, you can also deep condition after your co-wash but it's less necessary.
- Avoid combing
- Sleep with a satin scarf, to keep your hair from rubbing on your cotton pillow.
- Baggy your hair
- Protein conditioner some good ones are CPR motions, aphogee is good to but it's a very heavy treatment and is recommended to be used every 6-8 weeks only.
- Avoid heat
- Use heat protectant if you must use heat

Vitamins and growth aids

If you want to achieve lenghty, strong hair, you need to have a good and balance diet. Since eating too much meat is not good for us and a lot of fish can be full of mercury because of sea pollution. I personally use spirulina -which has over 10 times more protein than meat and fish- and chlorella which is also rich in protein. If your diet is unbalanced or you are feeling stressed, you can also supplement your diet with vitamins or multivitamins. I personally use perfectil (skin, hair and nails), biotin and MSM, I must confess that I'm not really regular with them and as a result don't take them everyday.

How do I know my Hair type?

This won't cover the 'EXACT' match of hairtypes because there's hardly anyone in this world who doesn't have at least 2 different hair types on their heads. There are 4 different hair types which in turns are dividedd in different subcategories represented by letters. For example, most black/ mixed race people have hair type 3 and 4. Some have 3a, 3b, 3c or 4a, 4b or 4c hair types. Find out which hair type is yours. For more pictures click here.

It is also very difficult to be completely precise because our hair is very broad in texture and varies; it would be very difficult to find a correct photo of each. Please let me know if anything is incorrect and I will change it. THE 4'S One of the most common type is 4B. This hair type is wonderfully unique. No visible curl pattern/coil but from afar, it can resemble what I like to call "Cotton Cloud Full Of Wool" ^_^ Oh, yes, extremely soft to the touch but extra fine/fragile So don't comb CRAZY! Very delicate indeed (*pushes up imaginary glasses*) Stay away from evil ingredients such as Mineral Oil, Petroleum, etc, you know the drill. Satin bonnets are great. And to learn how to avoid knots click here.

___________________________________________

4A. Easily susceptible to damage due to excessive combing. Combing hair dry leads to frizziness and open to breakage. Extremely Versatile And as always, keep moisturized! Limit your combing (use wide-tooth combs, bone combs are great, but not the thin ones; they RIP and TEAR your hair) READ the back of all hair products, mineral oil always sneaks in. Baggy, baggy, Baggy! BAGGY
LADIES!

  (she has highly-textured 4A hair)
(his hair looks styled this way also though, but I can still see his growth) ____________________________________________________

THE 3'S This hair type has many subtypes Can range from big ringlets, small ringlets, corkscrew, straw, to tight curls(curly lil balls). Okay, that didn't sound right, but at least I got my point across Pull it, stretch it, wrap it, and watch it sling back to its original state. Has a lot of body and volume, doesn't it? Easily absorbs water and has shrinkage when it dries. Always maintain moisture or can easily be prone to dryness/frizziness.. Keep it that way and you're asking for easy breakage. Limit combing, use a wide-tooth. Take the time to read all hair products, don't want to dry your hair out! Sleep with satin bonnet/scarf. 3 SUBTYPES: 3A, 3B, 3C, 3D(3C/4A mixed) __________________________________________________ 3A: (doesn't he look like "Hey Arnold"'s cousin?) 3B: (Highly-Textured 3B combed out into 'Fro, possibly bantu knotted also.) 3B/3C: (Highly-textured) 3C:
3C TWA:(combed out into Afro) 3C/4A: (below) ___________________________________________

THE 2'S This hair type is wavy. 2A is fine, 2B medium textured, and 2C is thick & coarse with a frizzy look. Needs a balance of both moisture and control. Versatile- can easily be styled to look
 different.

2A:

  2B: 2C:

THE 1'S This hair type is completely straight. No type of curl/wave pattern whatsoever. Can vary from extremely thin to extra coarse. Sometimes hard to keep certain styles-may fall during the day if doing various activities. Very sleek and shiny due to no curL/waVe which allows the light to reflect off of the hair giving it a shiny finish If 1's look dry and dull, it's most likely damaged. Fix that hair up! Deep-condition..wake it back to health. 1A:
